Scappoose Community Profile
The City of Scappoose is the home to some 6500 people
and lies between the Columbia River and mountainous
hillsides, approximately 20 miles North of Portland on
State Highway 30. Highway 30, a fully developed 5-lane
thoroughfare carries 35,000 cars a day through the City.
Historically, Scappoose was a hub for traders in the
1700’s and has evolved into an agricultural and bedroom
community to today. Scappoose sits adjacent to Multnomah
County and is the southernmost urban center in Columbia
County. With the high volume vehicle traffic, and the
majority of household income earners commuting to
Portland/Hillsboro for work; Scappoose is emerging once
again as a hub of commerce.
Major retail shopping centers have been developed with
more on the way, such as Fred Meyer, Sears and JJ’s
Sentry Shopping Center. The Scappoose Business
Development Advisory Committee is in the beginning
stages of developing a “Town Center Master Plan” for
City Council adoption.
The Scappoose Airpark boasts the longest and most
active, “non-towered” airport in the Sate of Oregon, is
the fastest growing in the Pacific Northwest and hosts
the most acres (700) of developable lands adjacent to a
FAA certified airport on the West Coast.
The median household income is approximately $55,500.
The city has a property tax of $3.22 per $1,000 of
assessed value. The consolidated (city and all
districts) tax rate is $13.406 per $1,000 of assessed
value.
There are a wide variety of residential housing
developments ranging from earlier built and entry level
homes, to executive living estates, comprising the full
range of prices as well, from $120,000 to $700,000.
Aside from agricultural related operations, Scappoose’s
principal private employer is West Coast Boot Company, a
family owned internationally renowned boot manufacturing
enterprise.
